POGO Western Pacific Regional Node
The Western Pacific Regional Node of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) is pleased to serve as a hub for ocean observation, research, and cooperation in the Western Pacific region. Established in January 2024 at the 25th POGO Annual Meeting in Ensenada, Mexico, our office is jointly hosted by the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources of China (FIO), and the Ocean Decade International Cooperation Center (ODCC).
Mission and Objectives
The mission of the Western Pacific Regional Node is to identify and fill data and knowledge gaps in the ocean-climate relationship in the region, coordinate relevant stakeholders nationally and globally, and enhance cooperative exchanges in marine observation, forecasting, disaster prevention, and mitigation. Our objectives include:
Promoting ocean observation and research in the Western Pacific region.
Facilitating communication and collaboration among stakeholders.
Supporting capacity building and training for young professionals in the ocean sector.

Activities and Achievements
Since its establishment, the Regional Node has been actively engaged in various activities to support ocean observation and research in the Western Pacific region. Our key achievements include:

Organizing the International Mooring Training Course and the West Pacific International Cruise, providing valuable training and research opportunities for young professionals in the ocean sector.

Developing an online platform for the Regional Node office, enhancing communication and collaboration among stakeholders.

Establishing a Steering Committee to guide the office's activities and ensure effective governance.
Collaboration and Partnerships
The Regional Node values collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders in the Western Pacific region and beyond. We work closely with IOCAS, FIO, ODCC, and other host institutions to jointly host events, share resources, and promote ocean observation and research. We also collaborate with the POGO Secretariat and other nodes to enhance our cooperative exchanges and achieve our common goals.

Opportunities for Young Professionals
The Western Pacific Regional Node is committed to supporting the development of young professionals in the ocean sector. We provide international career and training opportunities for enthusiastic young professionals with less than 10 years of professional experience in the ocean field. Our activities include mentorship programs, training courses, and research opportunities, aiming to build the capacity of the next generation of ocean scientists and professionals.

The Regional Node office is led by a full-time Director and Deputy Director, who are nominated by IOCAS and FIO respectively, on a rotational basis every two years. For the 2024-2026 term, Dr. Hui Zhou from IOCAS serves as the Director, and Dr. Wei Zheng from FIO serves as the Deputy Director. A full-time Secretary supports the office's operations. The Regional Node staff maintain regular and effective communication with the POGO Secretariat and other nodes, and participate in relevant POGO events and activities.
